5 Best Practices for Maintaining Your PMP Certification
Congratulations! You passed your Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification. All of that hard work studying, taking an exam preparation course and putting in real-life experience hours led to this point. What a relief! Take a break; you deserve it. But, don’t get too comfortable.
Remember, in order to stay certified you must continue to participate in professional development activities to earn and report professional development units (PDUs). The PMP certification requires you to earn
per a three-year certification cycle
. You need to be aware of the parameters for the PDU requirements. See the PDU Distribution Guide to the right.
Below are five best practices for maintaining your PMP certification:
Understand the PMI Talent Triangle™
minimum of 35 PDUs
are required in the Education category, which consists of three subcategories: Technical Project, Leadership and Strategic and Business Management. A minimum of 8 PDUs must be earned in each of the three subcategories. The remaining 11 PDUs can be earned within any of the Education categories.
Become a PMI member (if you aren’t already)
PMI and your local chapter provide many opportunities to earn PDUs, including live and virtual conferences, webcasts and on-demand content. As a PMI member these are available at a discount (or even free), and they will automatically report your PDUs to PMI. Check out

Don’t wait until the last minute
Don’t forget about the Giving Back category
There is a
maximum of 25 PDUs
allowed in this category. The activities for earning PDUs include: volunteering, creating knowledge, working as a professional, preparing and giving a presentation about a project or project management process, delivering training on a topic related to managing projects, etc. Within the ‘Working as a Professional’ subcategory, there is a max of 8 PDUs that you can earn.
And, finally…Remember to log your PDUs!
Log into PMI and navigate to your dashboard to report PDUs; this is where you will report all activities, including training, working in the profession, volunteering, etc.
It is important to submit all training for consideration, whether it is formal/classroom or on-demand content. There is a good chance it will qualify for credit within the talent triangle with an appropriate explanation and documentation.
